Tax Filing Extensions for Storms & Flood Victims

We were in contact with the IRS recently regarding various issues and in the process questioned the necessary procedures for filing returns extended to January 31, 2018 for victims residing in the counties listed by the IRS for Texas & Florida, LA & GA & others etc.

The IRS will automatically by zip code exclude late filing penalties at time of receipt of tax return, so nothing extra needs to be done by our filing method. However if the IRS does miss recording it as such, we will need to get a P of A and make a call to get it included in the extended filing relief.

If a taxpayer is a victim of a storm or flood and is not listed in the announced counties, we can call 1-866-562-5227 requesting to be included in the disaster relief delayed filing.

The one issue not yet resolved with the tax software providers & the IRS is how long the e-filing for 1040’s will be available to accommodate the e-filing of these extended returns.

In the past the IRS & software providers close down in November to retool and set up for the next filing cycle, so that remains an open issue at this time but hopefully e-filing will be available.
